The National Curriculum is delivered using the Cornerstones Framework as a basis to ensure coverage and progression throughout the school. Please follow the link below to find out more from the website.

Cornerstones Curriculum

The Cornerstones Curriculum has a variety of interesting topics for each year group. The teachers choose the topics for the year based on the children’s interests. The topics are then mapped out to ensure that all National Curriculum areas are incorporated. For more detail on each topic and for the curriculum map, please see the class pages.

In addition to changes in the curriculum, there has also been a change in the system of assessment. The current system of levels has been removed. From September 2014 Schools have developed new systems of assessments to run alongside the new expectations in each subject.

Assessment is a vital part of teaching and learning and as such helps teachers in planning work, identifying problems and helping children to make progress.

Assessment is an on-going process throughout the child’s school career. Teachers use both formal and informal opportunities to assess children’s progress and achievements. Assessment can be on a day-to-day basis, which informs teaching and learning. This may be carried out through questioning, observing and marking, which is on-going. It is used on a daily basis to inform the planning for the week. Also, we have the more formal SATs for Year 2 and Year 6 at the end of the year.

At Firs Primary School we have chosen to use the PIRA, PUMA and GAPs Tests along with the Fisher Family Trust Assessment system. We also assess children along the age related objectives for each foundation subject area every half term. . Parents can discuss their child’s progress and attainment at Parents Evenings in the Autumn and Spring terms.
