Both of the classrooms provide a calm environment and encourage the children to be independent; the children are able to find their own resources to support their learning.
Each classroom has a reading corner with a mixture of fiction and non-fiction books for the children to enjoy.
Each child has their own tray where they can keep things to take home and hat/gloves when the weather gets colder. They also have their own peg for their coat during the winter months.
Every class has at least one school councillor to help share their classes’ views and make changes across the school.

This term we will be learning all about London. Through Geography, we will look at the features of London, including its landmarks and what makes it a capital city. In History we will also be learning about a significant event in Londons history – The Great Fire of London. This event cause havoc in London in September 1666. We will be learning about the events surround the fire, how it spread so fast and what Christopher Wren designed afterwards. We will also be hearing about Samuel Pepys and his famous diary. Since the fire started in a bakery we will also be getting the opportunity to bake bread in design and Technology.
Fiction
This half term our model text is based off ‘Katie in London’ by Mairi Hedderwick. The children will be writing a Journey tale and we will be focusing on story structures and using story language.
Non-Fiction
Later in the half term the children will write a non-chronological report, in the form of a newspaper, all about the Great Fire of London.

A girl called Katie left us some images of her holidays but they were all ruined. We had to put the pictures back together and see if we could figure out where she was visiting

We were left an old box. Inside was some old cheese, wine and a diary. Who could it have belonged to?
During this Topic we will be learning about Amelia Earhart and how she challenged gender roles at the time, similarly we will also be looking at Nelson Mandela and how he challenged ideas about race. Through our Environmental Studies we will be looking at Greta Thunberg and how significant she is to fighting climate change. In Design and technology, we will be looking at how imporatnat it is to have a healthy diet and how to prepare dishes. We will also be learning about at were food comes from. In science we are looking at animals including humans.
Fiction
For this half term our model text is based off the book ‘Traction Man’ By Mini Grey. We have written a defeating the monster story, focusing on characterisation.
Non-Fiction
The children also be wrote an explanation text about healthy eating.
During this topic we will be learning about the oceans and continents in Geography. In Science we are learning all about animals. we will find out about what animals need to survive, classifying animals and investigate animal lifecycles. We will also be learning about animals food chains and what habitats different animals live in and why.

Our model text for this half term is based on the book ‘The Tiger who came to tea’ by Judith Kerr. We wrote our own character flaw story focusing on openings and endings.
Non-Fiction
We will wrote recounts to explain the tigers point of view and what he did during his day.
Fiction
Something came in and destroyed our classroom. I wonder what it could be? We all made a prediction.
During this topic we will be learning all about plants and gardens through science. We will be learning about seasonal change, growth of seeds and what seeds needs to grow. We will also be learning how to identify, name, and describe common plants and trees. Through Art we will be looking at the work of Georgia O’Keeffe and creating our own observational drawings of flowers. We will also be designing and building our our bug hotels in Design and Technology.
Fiction
This half term we will be looking at a model text based off ‘Jack and the Bean Stalk’ . We will be writing a defeating the monster story focusing on setting description.
Non-Fiction
We will them be looking at writing instructions and will also be looking at poetry and creating our own poetry about gardens, flowers and wildlife.
During this topic we will be learning about Dinosaurs. Through Science we will be identifying and classifing, living, dead and never alive, we will also look into habitats and food chains. Through our Environmental Studies we will be looking at extinction; looking at other animals now extinct or endangered due to climate change/human development. In history we will look at Jack Horner and Mary Anning, they were palaeontologists. Through Art we will be creating 3D sculptures of dinosaurs using clay.
Fiction
Our model text this half term will be based off the book ‘ Tyrannosaurus Drip’ by Julia Donaldson. We will be writing a tale of fear.
Non-Fiction
We will also be writing a persuasive text.
For our memorable experience this half term we will be hosting a dinosaur exhibition. We will be displaying all of our art work that we have made during the term, as well as our writing. We will then be inviting our parents and carers into to school to see what we have discovered about dinosaurs this term.

During the topic, in History, we will be learning about changes within living memory looking specifically at transport over time, including uses of bridges and tunnels. We will also be looking at Isambard Kingdom Brunel who was an architect. He is famous for building the Thames Tunnel. In Design and Technology we will be designing and building a bridge to solve a tricky problem. We will also be comparing transportation, looking into which ones are the most eco-friendly.
Fiction
This term our focus text is ‘The Tunnel’. We will be writing a portal story.
Non-Fiction
We will also be writing a recount about our visit to a castle.
Below are all the books that year 2 will be focusing on this year during pleasure for reading time. These books will be read to the children and are also exessable for them to read independently in the book corner. By the end of the year the children will be very familiar with these books.
It is important that all children continue to practise their learning at home to remember and embed what they have learnt in school that week. For Helpful Hollies and Lively Laurels home learning will be given to the children on a Friday and must be returned by the following Wednesday. The home learning will alternate between Maths and English.
If children are struggling or you are unsure how to support your child, please message your child’s class teacher on Class Dojo.
Children will also have the option of completing a home learning topic grid, where they can choose different activities to do at home. Children completes 4 of the activities they will earn a prize and a certificate at the end of the half term. Each time your child completes a piece of home learning, please bring it into school so it can be displayed.
PE will be every Monday afternoon for Lively Laurels.
Pe will be every Friday afternoon for Helpful Hollies.
Please send your child to school in their PE Kit. Please be mindful of the weather.
